The Boomerang Effects of Positive Thinking and Negative Thinking

The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich

Have you ever heard the phrase "Be careful what you wish for - you just might get it."?

As with most well-known phrases, there is some type of real-world reason why that phrase came into being to begin with. The effects of positive thinking and negative thinking - although not official "wishes" - do nonetheless manifest out in the real world.

Have you ever known someone who was constantly unhappy, complained all the time, and seemed to always have a dark cloud hanging over their head? Likewise, have you ever known someone who was so cheery and upbeat that you would purposely seek them out when you were feeling down, because their positive attitude always made you feel better?

Your thoughts and feelings always come back around!
With each of those types of people, the circumstances of their lives tend to be in alignment with their chronic ways of thinking. Yes, there are exceptions, but as a general rule, the phrase "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" tends to be accurate. The reason it is accurate is not because of some cosmic conspiracy, but rather because those people habitually have rich or poor thoughts.

At the same time, habitual positive or negative thoughts will also serve to consistently create positive or negative circumstances in your life. In addition, it is not always the long-term thoughts that get you, but the short-term thoughts as well.

If you have very strong negative or positive thoughts about something, those thoughts become your dominate vibration (for you Law of Attraction fans), or your dominate driving force, and something is going to manifest out of that eventually.

The other day I allowed myself to get too stressed out over some projects that I was working on, and I ended up spending several hours reliving the stress as I was trying to discuss the situation, and come up with some solutions. Long story short, by the time the discussion was over, I felt much better, and all was well in the world.

However, the next day, I got spanked by all of that negativity coming back at me.

Although I felt great the next day, and I was back in my normal positive mood, the negativity that I had created the night before hit me first thing the next morning with some highly unexpected and generally unpleasant circumstances.

I am proud to say that I had learned my lesson, though. I kept my positive attitude about me, even though by that point I was starting to feel like life was taking pot-shots at me just for the fun of it. The result of maintaining a positive attitude about the whole thing almost immediately turned into benefits for me, however.

In one circumstance, I was able to quickly and easily fix something that otherwise would have been disastrous (ever lose 2 years worth of bookmarks in your web browser?). In the other circumstance, I was able to let it go without becoming stressed about it, and found not one, but two different ways of dealing with it, and neither of them are very time-consuming or stress-inducing.

The moral of the story is that your thoughts - whether they are positive or negative - will color your experiences from that point forward. Sometimes you'll see this effect over a lifetime, and other times you will see the effect in the short-term.

The effect is always there, however. Just like a boomerang, your predominant thoughts are sent out into the world, and then they come back and hit you upside the head.

Your thoughts - whether positive or negative - will color your experiences from that point forward.Knowing that your thoughts will come back to you eventually in the form of your life's positive or negative experiences, why would you ever allow yourself to have a thought that you weren't going to like when it came back around?

Learn from my example: Don't toss a boomerang out there that you aren't going to want to catch when it comes back!

I have been listening to Mike Dooley's Infinite Possibilities program, and the experiences that I describe in this post are perfect examples of what Mike teaches in that program. That makes this whole thing even worse, because I actually KNEW BETTER than to continue with my negative thoughts, but I did it anyway. I again invite you to learn from my example, and I also encourage you to check out Infinite Possibilities. I am only on Disc 3 out of 12, and it is already proving to be far more valuable than what I paid for it.

Personal Development for Women

If the testosterone enhanced "go get 'em team!" attitude that a lot of men take towards personal development leaves you begging for something that is not so in your face - yet equally powerful - then Debra Moorhead's Personal Development Retreat may be just what you've been looking for.

Debra herself has battled many of the same demons that women today are faced with, and she now uses her knowledge and experience to help other people via coaching services, consulting, motivational speaking, and live seminars.

Personal Development for WomenI have been following Debra's writing for quite awhile, and have found her to be knowledgeable, insightful, and understanding of the challenges that people face. After hearing about her Personal Development Retreat to be held from May 30th to June 1st, 2008, I was thinking how wonderful it is for women to have an opportunity like this. In fact, I may do something similar myself for men at some point down the road, but in the meantime, Debra's upcoming activity looks like a real winner - and it's just for the ladies.

The event is going to be held at the French Quarter Inn, in Maysville, KY, and despite the stylish surroundings, Debra promises nothing but leisure, empowerment, and some quality time with other women who are also interested in personal development.

The overall theme of the retreat is going to be a focus on harnessing the creative processes that are involved in creating the life of your dreams. As a big believer in our role as the conscious creators of our lives, I love how the very theme of the event speaks of personal empowerment, rather than rehashed goal setting techniques or dry productivity practices.

In addition, the retreat will include access to both indoor and outdoor activities, scheduled events and down time, and a loose atmosphere that allows all participants to get the most out of the event, while doing so on their own terms. Very cool.

Also, Debra has set up a myriad of different ways to attend the event, including a savings for advance registration, discounts if you live in the area and won't be staying at the hotel, and the option of saving money by sharing lodging expenses with other female participants. All of the rooms have hot tubs, and the food for the entire event is also covered.

It sounds like loads of fun, and it (almost) makes me wish that I was a woman! Great job, Debra - can't wait to hear all about it afterwards!

The Position of Power and How to Use It

The Master Key System

It is a foregone conclusion that each of us is 100% in charge of our lives, yet as a species we still tend to let other people dictate how we feel, how our lives progress, or how happy we are in general.

This has to stop.

You are at this moment (and you always have been) in a position of power over your life. No one can control what happens from this point forward except for you; it doesn't matter what your present situation is. No matter who you are, or what your circumstances are, you can start right now to exercise your position of power, and you will retain that right for as long as you live.

YOU have the Position of Power in your life!
Always the best picture at iStockPhoto
Wow! Pretty cool, right? Okay, now what the heck does all of that mean?

In short, a position of power is simply your ability to control every single aspect of your life. However, a more situation-specific use of your position of power is where the magic really starts to happen!

Whenever you are considering any given course of action in your life, but you aren't 100% confident that things will go your way, or that you will do the "right" thing, adopting a position of power with regards to that specific situation will put you in a frame of mind that ensures your success.

Career/Job

It is perfectly natural to question your level of confidence or your abilities when you are looking for a rewarding career position, but it is also completely unnecessary - if you have the right attitude.

I guarantee that no matter where you work or want to work, if you have a burning desire and intention to do everything in your power to succeed, you are already in a position to do that job 10 times better than people who have more experience than you, or who have more education.

Your desire and your intention to do a good job are far more valuable than any education, or even a gold-plated resume'. In fact, any employer that you are considering interviewing with would be lucky if you even gave them the opportunity to hire you.

That's a position of power!

Health and Fitness

Many people who have struggled with their weight or their ability to be healthy will have very serious issues when it comes to having the confidence to achieve long-term success, or to excel in their fitness or athletic ventures.

There is nothing that you cannot do when it comes to your physical body. In fact, the physiology of the human body when it comes to weight loss or athletic success is one of the most well understood of all of the sciences.

If you have been led to believe that you can't lose weight or become an athlete because of your genetics or because of some physical limitation, you have been lied to.

Adopt the attitude now - once and for all - that you CAN achieve success, that you WILL achieve success, and in fact, you HOPE someone tries to talk you out of it, because you're ready to blow them out of the water with your confidence and your resolve to succeed.

That's a position of power!

Relationships

Are you trying to find that Mr. or Mrs. Right, but you think you're not attractive, or that you're overweight, or that you're not smart enough, funny enough, entertaining enough, blah, blah, blah…

If you keep thinking that way, you'll find a way to prove yourself right over and over again. You probably already have several times.

You can have anything that you want when it comes to relationship success!

Have you ever seen a guy who has a huge beer belly and bad body odor, yet he is dating one of the hottest girls in town? Have you ever seen a girl with curves in all the wrong places and really bad acne, yet she is on the arm of a guy who could be an underwear model for Calvin Klein?

Is it magic? Are those people under some sort of a spell? Are they being blackmailed or coerced?

Hardly. In those instances, the people who seem like unlikely candidates for the relationship success that they've achieved have simply adopted a winning attitude - they have a position of power. As far as they are concerned, Ms. Hottie and Mr. Underwear Model Guy are lucky to even get their time and attention.

That's a position of power!

Every situation that was just described could also be reversed:

  • When it's time for you to leave a job, not only is your present employer lucky to have gotten as much of your time as they have, but they owe you a good letter of recommendation, too! Even if you don't deserve one, you can probably still get it if your attitude is on straight when you ask for it.
  • When it comes time for you to stand down from your position as head health nut in your neighborhood or at your gym, you have already done your bit for King and Country. Make plans to continue on your own health and fitness path; the people that you have helped are better off for having had you in their lives. In fact, they should throw you a big going away party - complete with lots of cake and ice cream!
  • When it's time for you to leave a relationship, you aren't getting "away" from someone that you don't want to be with anymore. Rather, you have simply grown into a person that is no longer compatible with your previous mate. Not only are you well within your rights to take the nearest exit, but YOU will call the shots on how it all ends, not the other person.

Those are all positions of power.

YOU have the Position of Power! Here's the thing, though: Nothing has physically changed in any of the situations described above. In most cases, you will not be any smarter, cuter, richer, more educated, more evolved, or more experienced than you were when you started.

However, your mind is in the right place now, and your mind is what controls how you feel, what you say, and what you do.

How cool is it that by simply changing your mind, you can change your life?

6 Speedy Systems to Stop Self Improvement Stagnation

Positivity Space - Dare to Be Rich in All areas of Your Life!

If your life isn't getting any better no matter what you do, then you have reached a plateau that you must break through if you want to start seeing positive, long-term changes.

It is very often the case that we try and we try, and as far as our level of effort, we should be a smashing success. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, something isn't clicking into place, and we aren't seeing the desired results.

If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results, then here is a quote to keep in mind:

Self Improvement 101:
"If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always gotten!"

Here is a list of 6 ways that you can kick-start your self improvement efforts, and you only have to do them for 15 minutes each day.

Here is the key, though: You have to do them for 15 minutes each day, and you have to do this for 7 days in a row.

There are 2 points to this exercise:

  1. By doing something consistently for 7 days in a row, you will come to believe the very important truth that when you consistently apply yourself to something over and over again, you will come to understand and appreciate the sheer power of your will, and then you will be unstoppable.
  2. By taking 15 minutes of your time every single day for 7 days straight, you will also come to understand that by consistently taking the time to work towards your goals, there will be measurable results, even with just the quick, 15-minute time expenditure.

Depending on your goals, your measurements might be obvious, such as weight loss, or a positive financial or career advancement. For other goals, it may be something more along the lines of a measurable increase in your level of confidence, an idea for an effective action to take, or maybe just a sense of peace or focus that allows you to excel in your future endeavors.

In any case, I challenge you to do this exercise for 1 week straight, and to really put your heart into it. By taking any one of these suggestions and giving it an honest, 100% effort for 15 minutes each day, 7 days in a row, I guarantee that you'll bust through your self improvement plateau!

Research

Most people don't know what they don't know because they don't know what they don't know!

Did you get that?

In other words, ignorance is bliss. Spend your 15 minutes every day learning from quality sources about your area of interest. Don't just randomly search at Google, or even read your favorite blogs. Pick one area of your life that you want to improve, and find one or more quality, reliable sources of information about it, and delve deeply into it for 15 minutes every day. Be sure to take notes about any actions that you are taught or inspired to take.

Quality Time

Many people have heard of "quality time" with regard to their relationships, and if relationship success is one of your goals, then you could certainly use your 15 minutes each day for that activity. Spend that entire block of time dedicated 100% to your significant other, with zero distractions. If you don't have a significant other, then spend those 15 minutes every day writing out the qualities that you want in a potential mate, or even writing out your future relationship "success story".

You can use the quality time tool for things other than relationships as well. Sit down in front of a piece of paper and spend 15 minutes every day writing down every single thing that comes to your mind about whatever self improvement goal you have. Write down all of the positives and the negatives that come to mind about your goal. Before long, you will start to see a pattern develop that will help you to figure out which actions you need to take to succeed.

Exercise

If your goal is health or weight loss success, then obviously exercise is something that should be part of your daily routine. Lose the completely inaccurate belief that exercise needs to be done for hours in order to be effective, however. If you do quality exercises at the proper intensity for 15 minutes each day, 7 days in a row, you WILL net measurable results. Check out Fitness Destinations or Workout Pass for more info.

Also, exercise is NOT just for people who want to lose weight. The mental and personal productivity benefits that regular exercisers have access to are well documented. You can crank up your level of success in life by engaging in regular exercise, even if you don't want or need to lose weight.

Visualization

Visualization is not some "woo-woo" practice that only Law of Attraction junkies take part in. It does not matter what your personal belief systems are; the act of visualizing is something that you do in order to feel wonderful about your goal, and to put yourself in a state of mind that helps you to focus on what steps you need to take in order to attain that goal.

Visualization should be done 100% without distraction. Sit comfortably and in a quiet environment, or alternatively, listen to music that really helps you to "feel" what it will be like to have what you are visualizing for. If you are inspired to take any specific long-term or short-term action while you are visualizing, then do so!

Scripting

Scripting is basically the art of writing out what you want your life to be like. You write about your "perfect life" from the point of view of having already achieved it, and you don't need to be an accomplished author in order to do this effectively.

Simply sit down and write out - in great detail - what your life will be like once you have attained your goal. Use lavish words that describe a world where you are mindlessly happy, and paradise would pale by comparison. Really get into the exercise and have a good time while you're doing it. If you run out of things to write about, then spend your 15-minute segments reading and thinking about what you previously wrote. Be sure to really allow yourself to feel yourself in the world that you have scripted.

Meditate

The benefits of meditation have been so well documented that I will not use any time here to rehash those concepts. Meditation can be used as a tool to take yourself to another level of success, and it can be a powerful process if you are stuck and can't seem to move forward in your self improvement efforts.

In a nutshell, meditation is time when you don't actively think about anything in particular. Ordinarily, we have a difficult time NOT thinking about our lives, including our successes and our perceived failures. When you meditate, you give yourself time - 15 minutes in this case - to just let go and not worry about anything at all. By doing so, and releasing your attachment to your day-to-day concerns, you will often experience epiphanies which are "light bulb moments" when you are able to see things with an extreme level of clarity and a sense of purpose.

For more about visualization, scripting, and meditation, be sure to check out the Manifest a Miracle audio program.

BONUS: Put 5 (or 10) on It

If you think that you want to make a consistent effort towards your self improvement plans, but staying motivated or on track is a problem for you, try one of the most tried and true methods: Bribery.

Find a location where you can "stash some cash" and make a deal with yourself that every time you give your 15 minutes an honest effort using one of the above systems, you'll pay yourself $5 or $10 for that time.

Self Improvement 101At the end of the 7 days, you'll have accumulated either $35 or $70, and it is yours. You earned it! You can blow it on something completely frivolous, and then repeat the same process the following week, only for 20 minutes each day, then 25 minutes, 30 minutes, and so on. Stop when you get to a comfortable amount of time that you want to dedicate to your self improvement efforts on a daily basis, and then just maintain your new habit.

Keep going at that rate, and you'll soon be officially "self improved," and you will have rewarded yourself for every step of the journey as well!
